Abstract

abstract: “Preventing potential foreign animal diseases (FADs) is a high priority. The Secure Pork Supply (SPS) plan offers a voluntary framework for swine producers to plan biosecurity and prepare for outbreaks. This study aimed to identify the level of agreement in biosecurity planning between producer-made biosecurity plans and SPS guidelines. Biosecurity maps (N = 368) and written plans (N = 247) were collected from six Midwest swine companies. Results showed that 55.8% of maps required revision due to misplaced or missing features, and 80.9% of written plans contained conflicts with their corresponding maps. Primary issues were related to feed delivery activities and mapping of vehicle movements. Sites located in areas with moderate feral swine density had a 3-fold increased odds of needing map revisions. Human oversight in biosecurity planning is common and can lead to preparedness shortcomings. Future efforts should focus on providing additional biosecurity training and establishing quality control benchmarking.”
